STATE OF THE INDUSTRY
The Good News Is...

As with many other industries in the U.S. and around the globe, the boating industry has felt the effects of the depre -ssed economy.  But could this be the
year for the long awaited economic revival to begin? While we still have to face a steep  uphill climb, leading indicators are encouraging.

In his annual State of the Industry address at the Miami International Boat Show and Strictly Sail Miami this February, Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, stated "we clearly are beginning to see that consumers are tiring of deferring their boat purchases, and we're seeing more buyers coming to the shows. That seems to indicate to me that in the next couple of months, particularly as we enter the height of the selling season for the boating industry, we should see some increase in the sale of new boats." Companies are starting to ramp up in anticipation of increased demand for their products.

Excerpts:

Book of Dave Martin Designs
by David Martin
He paused a moment as he confidently felt the firmness of a Colt 38 automatic firmly tucked in his shoulder holster. As he proceeded unnoticed toward the Atlantic City ghetto, he gave a sidelong glance at his gleaming new custom Packard, left purposely at the station so that everyone in the town would think he had remained in New York for the night. He couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of it. He had banged his head about a month ago and then ordered his chief boat builder to remove the Packard body and replace it with a new Martin designed body with full headroom. It was the only full headroom Packard in the world.

The "BMS Power Skiff"
by Jerry D. Burkett
The BMSLong.Step™ concept was a result of being intrigued by the Westlawn Text 117, page 25, which discussed the concept of the "ideal beam for different speeds." The total residual resistance of the boat with the "low chine beam which is unrealistic in  practical terms" is substantially lower than the full beam width boat and the porpoising margin increases. The David Taylor Model Basin work referred to in the text was led by Eugene Clement. He has since retired but gave me a copy of the test reports that proved to be essential to my development work. Other essential pieces were the Daniel Savitsky porpoising limit analysis and his performance prediction analysis including the calculation of CG rise, which he kindly explained.  The idea on how to take advantage of the ideal beam concept came to me in 2001 and the patent was awarded in 2007.

The Landing School invites boat builders and repairers to annual job fair

Boating IndustryFriday March 12, 2010

ARUNDEL, Maine — The Landing School is inviting representatives from boat shops and yards around the world to meet its graduating class of 2010 at its annual Job Fair, Fri., April 2.

Marine employers will have direct access to more than 80 educated, enthusiastic students who are seeking employment in the marine industry following their June graduation, stated the company in a recent release. Students from The Landing School’s Boatbuilding, Yacht Design, Marine Systems and Composites programs will all be available to meet potential employers, and they will be allocating time for private one-on-one job interviews with select companies.

All marine businesses are invited to attend The Landing School Job Fair at no cost. This annual event is held for the benefit of the students and the marine industry. Representatives from marine businesses are invited to set up their literature tables at The Landing School on April 2 at 11:00 a.m. and then join staff and faculty for a tour of the facility and lunch. Beginning at 1:00 p.m., representatives will have the opportunity to present information about their companies to groups of students, and arrange for short interviews later in the day.

“We’re getting feedback from the industry that business are starting to turn a corner and new work orders are coming in,” said Barry Acker, president of The Landing School. “With growing business comes demand for well-trained professionals graduating from our programs.”

Marine companies can confirm their attendance at The Landing School Job Fair by downloading a participation form from its Web site, www.landingschool.edu, and returning it completed before March 19. Space is limited and will be allocated to companies in the order in which they respond. Employers who are unable to attend but would like to have a presence at the Job Fair can forward their company literature and open-job descriptions by March 26 so they can be made available to students.

    Market Outlook
School debates future of boat-building class

    Boating IndustryTuesday March 9, 2010

BRADENTON, Fla. — With boat building jobs now scarce in Florida and across the country, Florida's Manatee Technical Institute is considering dropping the boat-building class it started in early 2008, according to a report in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

When the program started, MTI officials saw boat building as the best way to teach manufacturing and the use of materials like fiberglass – plus they hoped companies would stay if the area had more trained workers. Now, with students struggling to find jobs, the Herald-Tribune reports that school officials are considering whether to scrap the class and wondering how to keep their other manufacturing programs relevant.

The number of students studying welding and machining at MTI has stayed flat even while enrollment at the school has risen by 16 percent over the past two years, the paper reports. The school has expanded programs like health care and information technology, where jobs are still available.

Still, they fear if they stop producing skilled workers for manufacturers, they will drive away local companies or other prospective employers.

"We're not going to stop training people for jobs that we can anticipate some opportunity for if not this moment at least sometime in the future," spokeswoman Maura Howl told the paper.

Nearby Sarasota County Technical Institute closed its last manufacturing program, machining, in June 2007, and plans to begin a program in welding and soldering computer boards are on hold.

SCTI Director Todd Bowden told the paper: "We would produce 15 to 30 graduates a year, and we have to ask: Is there a job market to absorb that?"
