Marine-industry needs assessment survey must be completed before November 15, 2010
Dear Colleague:

I urge you to complete the MITEC labor-needs assessment survey as soon as possible.

On November 15, the National Skills Coalition will meet with White House and Congressional leaders to discuss The Sectors Act of 2010, which focuses on building new workforce pipelines where skilled worker shortages exist, transforming the ways the labor pool is utilized, retrained, and compensated.

Your input is invaluable in demonstrating the workforce-development needs of the marine industry. This survey will provide me, your representative in the National Skills Coalition, with answers to many of the questions I will be asked at this important meeting, such as:
  • Does your industry have current job openings?
  • What challenges, if any, do you face in filling these positions?
  • Are there impending shortages of skilled workers in your industry, particularly as we start to come out of the recession?
Bottom line? The Sectors Act requires the Secretary of Labor to provide assistance to eligible entities -- such as MITEC -- in applying for and administering the grants, and disseminating information on best practices in industry or sector partnerships through conferences, websites, and annual reviews.

Translation: Money to stimulate growth of new jobs in the marine industry is available.

Let's make sure the marine industry is on the receiving end of this program: You can
help ensure that the marine industry is represented with enough solid data to educate the Administration about our labor and training needs. Fill out the survey now. It will take you only a few minutes.

To date, we have 150 responses, but we need at least 500 to build our case.
Please complete the survey today, and pass the link ( or this letter on to other employers in the marine industry.

Thank you!

Vice-Chair MITEC (Marine Industry Training & Education Council)

MITEC at National Skills Coalition
Marine-industry workforce development concerns to be presented in a national platform
Next month, MITEC Vice-Chair Pam Lendzion will join a special delegation of employers who will meet with Congressional leadership and representatives of the Obama Administration to discuss the role of sector partnerships in preparing workers for new technical jobs in the 21st century economy.

Sponsored by the National Skills Coalition, this program will help MITEC connect with other key industries who share our commitment to ensuring the U.S. has the technically skilled workforce necessary to grow the marine industry here in the future.

"MITEC is perfectly poised to serve the industry as funds are released for workforce development," says Lendzion, who also serves at ABBRA vice-president. "To move forward, though, we do need support and information from the industry employers, whether they are builders, repair yards, or marinas."

As she gathers this information for her presentation, Lendzion is encouraging employers to take the 2010 MITEC needs-assessment survey to provide her with the most current information possible about their own employment and training needs.
"The information we collect about employers, hiring practices, and available workers will be essential in establishing a clear picture both of our needs and of our potential for growth," says Lendzion.

To complete the MITEC needs-assessment survey, simply click HERE.

Once the analysis is completed, MITEC will publish it on its website at so that anyone working in the marine industry will have access to the results. According to Lendzion, "This information will benefit marine associations, trade organizations, manufacturers, dealers, yards, groups or individuals applying for both national or state grants, and others who are working to develop marine-training programs."
