Maritime Swap Meet To Take Place April 23    
Sea Scouts on board longboat Bear
Come on down to the Northwest Maritime Center on Saturday April 23 and hunt for treasure in the annual swap meet. Starting at 8am and running until 1pm, the swap meet is a great place to find used nautical supplies and one-of-a-kind items at bargain prices.

All proceeds will benefit the Sea Scouts, who are organizing the event this year. The meet will take place on the old Landfall site, directly across from the NWMC at 431 Water Street.

Bargains on hand will include great deals on 2010 Wooden Boat Festival merchandise.

 Maritime Center Hires New Finance Manger 
The Northwest Maritime Center is thrilled to announce the hiring of Eileen Johnston as the new Finance Manager. Eileen brings years of experience managing and interpreting clients' finances in her own accounting and tax practice, and most recently as the CFO of OlyCAP. Eileen replaces longtime Finance Director Pete Helsell who retired earlier this month.

Opening Day Parade & Art Unveiling

Saturday, May 7 marks the opening day for boating season in Port Townsend, and once again the Northwest Maritime Center is the place to be. Not only will staffer Rob Sanderson be the announcer for the annual boat parade as it passes by the NWMC dock, but we will also celebrate new artwork on the Commons.

Everyone is invited to stop by at noon as we unveil the bronze sculptureThree Otters by renowned artist and Whidbey Island native Georgia Gerber. The sculpture will be on the Commons near the beach and will provide a great backdrop for the Maritime Center as well as for people to interact with. We are so grateful to the Summit Family Foundation for making this possible.  

After the brief ceremony, everyone will make their way to the NWMC dock where they'll have the best view of the annual boat parade sponsored by the Port Townsend Yacht Club. The parade starts as soon as the 12:45 ferry clears the area. 

In the Shop: Fleet Boats Get Ready for Busy Summer; Farewell to Kees

The Boat Shop is buzzing with activity as we get our fleet boats ready for a busy summer of classes and programs. Thunderbird Risa, seen above, is getting paint, varnish, and some work on her cabin. We're getting some help from PT Foundry for new ballast for Dorjun and hardware for commissioned boat Buzzard's Bay.  

Townshend, one of our longboats, got a new plank and will soon carry Bravo Team students for their spring journey, taking place May 10-13. They are seen below prepping for the trip.

Finally, we are sad to announce that Boat Shop Educator Kees Prins will be stepping down next month. Kees made the shop what it is today, designing and outfitting the interior, hiring skilled shiprwrights, designing boats for clients (like Townsend Tern), and sharing his considerable skill and expertise with many visitors. We wish him the best.

In addition to a harbor packed to the max with gorgeous wooden boats, you always expect to meet some of the world's top wooden boat, woodworking experts and amazing adventurers at the Wooden Boat Festival.  This year, we're thrilled that world-renowned builder/sailors, Lin & Larry Pardey; best selling technical writer and sailor Nigel Calder; Popular Woodworking editor, Chris Schwarz; Academy Award-winning producer ("The Kids Are Alright") and documentary filmmaker (showing his latest film "Charlotte" about Nat Benjamin's 6 years building the boat on Martha's Vineyard) Jeffrey Levy-Hinte and Fine Woodworking and The Hand Plane Book author, Garrett Hack will augment the incredible talent of local and regional presenters packing the weekend with educational and hands-on fun.
