The ABYC Refrigeration and Air Conditioning certification course is designed for the marine technician that has at least a rudimentary level of experience and or prior training in working with these systems. The ABYC certification course consists of two and one half days of extensive material review covering the following areas: Installation and troubleshooting of both AC and DC electrical systems related to refrigeration, Installation and troubleshooting of air management system, Installation and troubleshooting of related plumbing systems, Installation and troubleshooting of the refrigeration system, Troubleshooting and repair of system mechanical components, Installation and troubleshooting of reverse-cycle air conditioning systems. The AC and Refrigeration ccertification exam will be given on the third day of the A/C and Refrigeration class. Optionally, the attendee of this program may attend a fourth day for a thorough review and exam to achieve EPA coolant certification for these systems. The ABYC standards manual, ABYC study guide, and your class notes may be referred to during this exam. The current ABYC Standards are available to members as on-Line (WebStir), the book, or CD; however no laptops or mobile phones will be allowed to be used during the exam. This one day class is offered at the conclusion of the A/C Refrigeration Certification class. It is designed to equip the student with the EPA coolant certification necessary to purchase bulk refrigerant. The EPA Section 608 test is intended to measure a technician's knowledge of refrigerant containment laws as established by the Clean Air Act. Areas covered by the test include modern service, installation and disposal practices for refrigerant bearing appliances and the proper use and maintenance of equipment required for this purpose. Questions also require knowledge of how and why refrigerants effect our environment.
