Ill. boat maker settles claims over hull IDs

BENTON, Ill. (AP) -- An Illinois-based boat-making company has paid $105,000 to settle a lawsuit by federal prosecutors alleging it removed or altered identification numbers on refurbished boats.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for southern Illinois says West Frankfort-based Leisure Properties LLC cooperated with the government during the investigation before resolving the matter.
Prosecutors say that while doing business as Crownline Boats, the company in 2009 and 2010 refurbished 21 unsold boats returned to it.

But the company issued those vessels new hull identification numbers without prior approval from the Coast Guard, breaking federal law.

The Coast Guard and FBI investigated the case.

A message seeking comment left Friday with the company was not immediately answered.
